Model Railway Layouts Evolve

In her latest video, "Channel News! Farkham, Buxton & Llanwyddyn. PLUS Shows in 2026," Lucy of the newly rebranded YouTube channel Loading Gauge provides a comprehensive update on her current projects, a major layout sale, and her upcoming exhibition schedule. The video marks a significant turning point for her hobby, focusing on growth, technical evolution, and a shift toward TT120 scale modelling.

The End of an Era: Selling Farkham

The most surprising news in the update is the sale of the well-known layout, Farkham. Lucy admits that after events in October, she "completely fell out of love" with the layout. After four months of it sitting idle and gathering dust, she decided it was time for it to find a new home.

The layout has been sold to Neil of The Little Layout Company, whom Lucy describes as the perfect "custodian" for the timeless classic. Neil shares his plans in the video, explaining that he intends to integrate his company’s "MLC system" (Model Layout Controller) and add new lighting to showcase the system's full potential. He also plans to return Farkham to the exhibition circuit in 2026, potentially featuring six-foot traverses or a "roundy-roundy" version similar to what Lucy previously operated.

The Rise of TT120 and Llanwyddyn

While her larger Buxton layout has taken a "back seat" to allow for the time-consuming bespoke building and detailing it requires, Lucy has shifted her immediate focus to her TT120 scale layout, Llanwyddyn.

Llanwyddyn was born out of a desire to have a portable layout ready for the 2026 exhibition circuit. This smaller scale has allowed Lucy to experiment with new technologies, specifically CAD design and 3D printing. She reveals that she has been teaching herself Autodesk Fusion to design her own rolling stock, starting with a Dogfish ballast wagon. To bring these designs to life, she invested in an Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra resin printer, which she believes will open "a whole new layer of creativity" for custom parts and structural components.

2026 Exhibition Schedule

Fans will have plenty of opportunities to see Llanwyddyn in person throughout 2026. Lucy announced a busy debut year for the layout:

  • Key Model World (NEC): April (Official Debut)
  • Beyond Steam (Swindon): July
  • Chatham: July
  • Schubernetes: August
  • Mid Essex Show: September
  • Statfold (Wally) & Fareham: October (In talks)

Lucy expressed her excitement about meeting viewers in person at these events and hinted that by the time the shows arrive, the layout might even feature her own 3D-printed wagons.

The Meaning Behind "Loading Gauge"

Finally, Lucy addresses the channel's rebranding from its previous layout-specific name to Loading Gauge. The change reflects her desire to "push herself as a railway modeller" and not be confined to a single scale or project.

The name "Loading Gauge" plays on the idea of "what gauge is loading today?". It gives her the freedom to switch between TT120, OO gauge, 3D printing projects, or even O gauge in the future without the channel feeling inconsistent.
